My days at La Garou CampOUT were filled with messages from the Universe. I found myself frequently visited by Dragonflies and Butterflies; at times, it almost seemed as if they were following me. After repeated visits and landings on me from these creatures, it became clear these were unmistakably meant for me. After coming home, I decided to look up their significance. Here is what I found…
The butterfly, through it’s metamorphosis from the caterpillar, symbolizes rebirth and the soul…. Butterflies are often used in art as symbols for female energy, homosexuality, sensuality, temptation, marriage, death and good luck as well as rebirth and immortality. It is also a symbol of creativity and freedom.
The dragonfly can symbolize swiftness, activity and whirlwinds, but, like the butterfly, it also symbolizes rebirth and immortality. They also symbolize transformation and adaptation. When mating, dragonflies form a heart shape so they are also a symbol of love.

Combine these symbols with the drawing of the Tiwaz rune (another meaning here), Tiwaz speaks of balance, sacrifice, and justice and represents determination, male sexuality, and symbolizes new challenges and initiations into new understandings. It seems clear that my gender journey is a purposeful one… and that I’m intended to walk this path of uncertainty and exploration in order to illuminate the path for others and give voice to others living in the grey space. I feel the call to be “two-spirit” and not choose one sex over another, and thus perhaps am here to fight for those like myself who choose to be both- masculine and feminine.
Life is a journey paved with many tempting spaces to park. I vow to remain in motion… to continually expand and grow.
